Learning a New Language

For a while now, I’ve been using Duolingo to practice a new language. As you may have noticed, my last name isn’t all that Norwegian! But it is as common in the Netherlands as many of the most common Norwegian last names are.

My Dutch heritage (on my father’s side) goes pretty far back, and from what I know, none of us here in Norway can speak Dutch as of now. But I want to change that.

I started learning Dutch a few months back, and I’ve been doing it on and off. I need to get into a better routine of it, and I think one of the ways to do that is to listen to Dutch audiobooks and watch Dutch television. This has proven to be a bit more difficult to do than I first anticipated. First off, I can’t seem to download Dutch audiobooks on my Audible, which was a bummer.

My plan was to read and listen to the first Harry Potter book in Dutch. I bought the Kindle edition with that in mind, but haven’t been able to get my hands on the audiobook yet.

But as many of you know, I am going to Amsterdam in just a few weeks! There I intend to get my hands on some Dutch books, and keep on practicing. I don’t expect to be talking much Dutch while I’m there this time around, but I really want to try. So there might be some awkward video footage of me butchering Dutch words to be seen after the trip!

Do you have any tips for learning a new language? Any apps, games, books or movies you would recommend? Let me know 😊

Wens me geluk!

Imparare l’italiano

I love to explore other languages! My love of words came very early on and I was an early reader and an early writer. This has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was lucky to have family that picked up on this and started to teach me English at an early age as well.

Later in life I’ve been learning a little French, a tiny bit of Dutch and now I’m going all in to learn Italian. And Duolingo is helping me in a fun way. I’ve recommended the app in an earlier post as well and I stand by it 😛

Top 5 Apps of June!

June has come and passed and better later than never, here are my most used apps of June 🙂

1. Minion Rush

We’ve been waiting for the sequel to Despicable Me for a while now and Gameloft gave us a little tease with the game Minion Rush. It has a lot of resemblance to Subway Surfer, but I actually think this game was a lot more fun.

2. Duolingo

I love languages and the power of words. That’s why I’ve always wanted to learn as many languages as I can. I tried to learn French in school, but the teachers weren’t very good so I’m giving it a new go with the help of Duolingo. It’s a fun and easy way to learn the basics of a new language.

3. Polamatic

As I’ve shown you guys more than once, I’m a sucker for anything Polaroid! So when I saw the Polaroid app on Google Play I just had to give it a go!

It’s been fun taking some of our vacation photos with the retro feel of Polaroid on my phone 🙂

4. Sleep as Android

When I got this app I actually started to wish that either Simon or I talked in our sleep 😛 Not so exciting to listen to recordings of caughing and turning. But I could definitely see a connection to when the app told me I had little deep sleep and how I felt during the day afterwards.

Sleep as Android lets you keep track of your sleeping and it works as an alarm and wakes you up when you’re out of your deepest sleep.
