Netflix – Christina de Vries

After I had two of my wisdom teeth removed a little over a week ago, I had a couple of days where I just didn’t have the energy to do much other than lie on the couch and watch Netflix.

It’s been a while since I’ve explored the indie movie selection on Netflix, even though I love stumbling across quirky, weird films that stand out. This time though, I stumbled across two that I loved, and I thought I’d share them with you!

Unicorn Store (2017)

Unicorns, lots of colors, and a dash of magic in the world of a grown up?!
I was sold by the idea as soon as I came across it, and jumped right in!

I absolutely loved Brie Larson and her character in this movie. It’s so filled with color and magic, and a quite a lot of anxiety and fear about the whole concept of growing up and making the right choices as an adult.

I can definitely relate!

The Incredible
Jessica James (2017)

Woman struggling as an artist and as a single woman… Well, that sounds familiar! Press play!

Jessica Williams plays the character Jessica James so well, and I just loved how funny and strong of a female lead she is! Not every movie about being single has to have a damsel in distress feel to it, even if they are showing the hard parts about getting over someone and trying to move on.

We need more strong leads as Jessica who are outspoken, confident, and not afraid to be sex positive!

So, there you have it! Just a couple of movie recommendations for you!

Even though I’m not a big fan of crime in books, I do love me some crime in movies and documentaries! And lately (watched a lot of documentaries while I was sick), I’ve been addicted to true crime. So I thought I would share some of my favorites with you guys!

Conversation with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

When the subject of serial killers come up in conversations, Ted Bundy is usually one of the first names that come to mind. I knew of him before the Netflix series came out, but I had never really read up on him or the crimes he committed.

The mind of people that can harm and kill over and over again, seemingly without any kind of remorse, it fascinates and terrifies me at the same time. Ted Bundy is the prime example of that someone who you just wouldn’t suspect to be the monster that he was.

I found The Ted Bundy Tapes to be very informative, entertaining and well put together. It’s a story worth knowing.

The Keepers

I kind of stumbled upon The Keepers, and boy am I glad that I did. Glad, and also horrified and angry! This is one that will bring out the feels!

It tells the story of the unsolved murder of nun Sister Cathy Cesnik, who taught English and drama at Baltimore’s Archbishop Keough High School, and her former students’ belief that there was a cover-up by authorities after Cesnik suspected that a priest at the school was guilty of sexual abuse of students.

The amount of work that parts of the Catholic community went through to seemingly hide the abuse of a huge amount of young girls is just mind-blowing. I just couldn’t believe it, and at the same time, I wasn’t all that surprised. And the craziest part of it all is thinking about how many other cases like this that’s probably out there, hidden in the dark.

Evil Genius

In August 2003, an attempted bank robbery in Erie made news headlines across America when the robbery-gone-wrong turned into a public murder. The attempted robbery was a pizza delivery driver who had a bomb locked around his neck. Known as the “pizza bomber” case, a manhunt ensued to find out who was responsible for the crime. Authorities eventually arrested Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong for the delivery man’s death. She was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but this four-part Netflix original documentary series sets out to prove that there’s more to the conspiracy and murder than what was previously thought.

I had never heard about the “pizza bomber” case before I came across Evil Genius, but it sure is a story of evil at work here, and we get a front-row view of a woman that’s truly disturbed.

Marjorie is fascinating to watch, but there’s also something about her and this whole case that just makes your skin crawl.

Making a Murderer: Part 2

When the first part of Making a Murderer came out on Netflix, I was just as hooked as everyone else was! There’s something that’s not right about the whole Avery case, and the Netflix series really brought that into the light for a whole world to see.

A man wrongfully convicted for a crime that spent nearly two decades behind bars decides to file a suit against Manitowoc County. Shortly after, Avery is again behind bars, accused of the murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach. He claims to have been set up by the police, and if the series tells the truth, it sure seems like it.

Now they’re back with a bigger and stronger legal team. Steven and Brendan are building a stronger and stronger case, but for some reason, there’s always some part of the legal system that manages to keep them behind bars to pay for a crime they claim to be innocent of.

The whole Avery case is fascinating, and it got even more so during the second part.

I can’t wait to see what happens next!
